Bitumen and Heavy Oil: AACI Research Program

AERI/ARC Core Industry (AACI) Research Program

The AACI program provides the technical underpinning that enables industry to minimize its risk and development costs and maintain technology leadership. For an annual fee of $130,000 (CDN), member companies are entitled to:
  • play a major role in developing the R&D program focused on the technology required for field applications
  • direct access to research results needed to maintain industry's technological edge and protection of intellectual property to maximize commercialization opportunities
  • direct role in defining intellectual property development
  • license-fee free use of AACI technology
  • shared results from field demonstration testing
Long range planning for the program is the responsibility of the Policy and Program Committee with membership from the senior executives of the industrial member companies and senior officers of ARC and AERI (Alberta Energy Research Institute). Directives from the Policy and Program Committee include:
  • an industry-driven management system
  • more emphasis on R&D linked to field operations
  • frequent project evaluation and technology needs assessment
  • direction for innovative projects

Technology transfer

A Technical Committee composed of industry members, ARC and AERI monitor the technical progress of the program. Regular workshops are held with engineering and field staff from member companies in order to review the progress in each strategic area and provide practical guidance and priorities. These workshops provide an excellent forum for facilitating technology transfer. The AACI program also provides opportunities for ARC staff to be seconded to the field and staff from the member companies to participate directly in the projects as visiting engineers in the ARC laboratories
