Bitumen and Heavy Oil: 3D Visualization Centre

3D Visualization Center

A key facility for our numerical modelling activities is our 3-D visualization center, which allows simulator results to be displayed in three dimensions. Numerical modelling is one of the most critical activities in our research programs. Generally, we model the experiments for design purposes before experimental activities begin, and after the experiment to help our understanding of the results and to predict the field behaviour.

This activity is iterative, with the experimental modelling results being used as a basis for field simulations. The iterative loop is completed with field observations being modelled and used to design further experimental activities.

The Computer Modelling Group (CMG) STARS simulator is the main numerical modelling reservoir simulator that we use for modelling experimental results and field pilots.

We work with CMG at extending the models, based on our laboratory results and field activities. When undertaking field wide studies, we often use the GeoQuest series of simulators.
