Carbon Conversion
Along with our research into carbon capture and storage, we are developing technologies that convert hydrocarbons into higher-value products. Our work focuses on enhancing existing conversion technologies and discovering new ones.
Converting hydrocarbons into higher end products offers economic and environmental advantages, such as:
- helping to improve overall efficiency
- reducing waste by-products
- supporting the storage of CO2
For example, some conversion technologies create hydrogen as a by-product, which can be used for oil sands upgrading, power generation and potential transportation fuels.
Currently our activity is focused on two main areas:
- exploring how different of biomass (e.g. wood waste, municipal waste, algae) can be converted to other products, such as methane
- gasification
