Carbon Conversion Capture and Storage: Penn West CO2 EOR Project

Penn West Pembina Cardium CO2 EOR Monitoring

Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures (AITF), working with other Alberta research providers has completed a key project to monitor CO2 injected at an EOR site. This work was done at the Penn West Pembina Cardium CO2 EOR site, which is owned and operated by Penn West Energy.

The primary funding for this five-year project, the first of its kind in Alberta, was provided by the Alberta Energy Research Institute (AERI) and Western Economic Diversification, with Alberta Environment, Natural Resources Canada and Environment Canada also providing funding and in-kind support provided by Penn West Energy.

AITF was the project manager for this research initiative, and also provided expertise in:

  • environmental monitoring (atmospheric, water and soil monitoring)
  • geochemical modelling
  • reservoir modelling

The project built on knowledge gained at the Weyburn CO2 EOR project. Using leading-edge CO2 monitoring tools and applications, this project has helped us better understand the fate of CO2 injected into petroleum reservoirs in the Alberta Basin. As well, testing leading-edge CO2 monitoring tools has added to the growing body of international knowledge.

Along with Penn West Energy, AITF worked on this project with:
  • University of Alberta
  • University of Calgary
  • Alberta Geological Survey
