Carbon Conversion Capture and Storage: Monitoring Technologies

Measurement, Monitoring and Verification Technologies for CO2 Storage

Carbon storage as the potential to prevent CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere, but monitoring must be in place to show it is being used in a way that won't impact our health, safety or environment.

Monitoring also provides the data for calculating and substantiating emissions reduction credits.

We have used a wide variety of monitoring tools in field demonstration projects in Canada and around the world. Through our projects, we monitor:

  • CO2 within geological reservoirs
  • movement of CO2 to other formations
  • movement of CO2 from geological formations into the shallow sub-surface or atmosphere

Our work has made us world-renowned leaders in the following technologies:

  • atmospheric monitoring
  • groundwater monitoring and modelling
  • soil gas monitoring
  • geochemical monitoring and modelling
  • reservoir simulation

Our projects have helped both industry and government better understand the behaviour of CO2 and increase public confidence in CO2 storage applications. Some of our monitoring projects are listed here.

Penn West Pembina Cardium CO2-EOR Monitoring

AITF provided expertise in geochemical modelling, groundwater monitoring, atmospheric monitoring and reservoir simulation.

Weyburn CO2 Storage and EOR Monitoring and Storage Project

The Weyburn CO2-EOR Monitoring Project is one of the largest CO2-EOR projects in the world. In the first phase of this project, we provided expertise in geochemistry and reservoir modelling. AITF's work was instrumental in demonstrating the potential to store over 25 million metric tonnes of CO2 safely in the Weyburn carbonate formation.

Enhanced Coalbed Methane (ECBM) in China

While testing the ECBM process in both Alberta and China, we have developed new tools for monitoring and modelling the behaviours of CO2 and the potential for enhanced coalbed methane recovery.  Technologies include geochemical monitoring, atmospheric monitoring, groundwater monitoring and reservoir simulation.
