Fuels and Lubricants
In 1939, the Alberta Research Council opened its gas lab to assess the quality of gasolines in Alberta.
Today, our work is nationally recognized and has grown to offer a diverse range of services to the oil and gas and renewable fuels industries. We offer:
- specialized characterization services
- ability to problem-solve difficult processes
- an independent, unbiased research partner to evaluate new equipment and products

Characterization services
Upstream (unrefined) and downstream (refined) analyses
We offer product evaluation and quality assessment of fuels, lubricants and crude oils. Our petroleum analyses meet Canadian, American and international specifications
Renewable fuels
We help biodiesel producers select which oils will work best for biodiesel, and also analyze the final product.
Proficiency testing, surveys and method development
Proficieny testing through the International Quality Assurance Exchange Program
This proficiency testing program gives participants the opportunity to evaluate and assess personnel, equipment and methods, and is a critical step in qualifying for accreditation.
Method and specification development
We offer leading edge of technology through our work in dveloping methods and specifications for upstream, downstream and renewable fuel characterization. These new methods help our customers lower costs and improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Industry product characteristics surveys and database
This program helps our customers understand the trends in the industry. While most of our surveys focus on downstream products, we have also surveyed biodiesel and will soon be doing a survey on bitumen.
International Analyses
We perform petroleum analyses to Canadian (ARC, CGSB), American (ASTM) and international (ISO) specifications. We maintain an ISO 17025 accreditation through the Standards Council of Canada and we are recognized by the Canadian Department of National Defence.
