We have a proven track record of working together with our partners to move ideas from the lab into the marketplace.

  • Our historic achievements include developing the technology for separating oil from oil sands - the keystone of Alberta's multi-billion-dollar oil sands industry - and the landmark inventory of Alberta's resources compiled by the Alberta Geological Survey.
  • Over the past 20 years ARC has made significant contributions to the growth and sustainability of industry in Alberta.
  • We developed enhanced steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) technology for producing heavy oil.
  • We pioneered process improvements in the forest products industry that have saved Canadian makers of oriented strandboard $192 million since 1997.
  • We had a leading role in demonstrating geological storage of CO2,in North America and China.
  • We have played a major role in developing reclamation technology for surface mined sites in Western Canada.

Considerable Patent and Licensing Experience

ARC has considerable experience and expertise in obtaining licenses and patents for new technologies.

  • At the end of the 2006-07 fiscal year, ARC held 143 patents in 21 countries. 
  • ARC manages 206 patents, 369 patent applications and 62 trademark files, including those managed on behalf of AERI (Alberta Energy Research Institute) developed by the former Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA) and through the AACI program.
  • During the 2007-08 fiscal year, ARC had 31 patent applications filed and 17 patents issued.
  • From 1999 to 2007, ARC has produced $25 million in royalties, licensing fees and product sales.
  • We managed 114 active patent families (protected technologies) for ARC, 20 technologies for C-FER and 24 on behalf of AERI.
  • 862 patents have been issued to ARC and our clients since 1921.
